Many of these players are young inexperienced players and poker will be their first exposure to gambling. These players will be excited, nervous, and anxious all at the same time, trying to emulate what they have seen on television. They will enter the poker tournament world with expectations of taking it by storm.
Unfortunately these expectations, combined with the risk of losing money, can be devastating to a young inexperienced player. Enter the world of tournament poker unprepared and players known as sharks will feast on you. While some young players do become very skilled and win large amounts of money, most win very little and lose quite a bit. Tournament poker, like most things in life, requires skill and training, along with years of experience, before you reap the vast rewards shown being won on television.
The following five tips can help new players make the transition from the friendly game played at home to the shark invested world of tournament poker. These tips will not make you a world class player. They may, however, prevent you from being beaten out of your hard earned money by a journeyman player just trying to take advantage of your inexperience. These tips are for tournament play, some may translate to cash games, but they are intended for tournament players.
