Poker: Every Game Needs A Donkey

January 21, 2012 – 12:52 am

Playing poker is a game where players combine patience, math skills and nerves to extract money from the other players at the table. In my time of playing poker, I have never sat down at a table where at least one donkey was not present. Some of the time, especially early on, I was the donkey.

In a game like poker everybody can learn to play relatively quickly. Once you have learned the basic rules and have a little money to play with, you are good to go. Older players will line up to help you learn and give you advice on how to play. Older players know the money won at the table will likely come from a donkey.

Donkeys are the players that will marry any two cards. What I mean by marrying any two cards is that no matter what they will not fold them. It may be their child was born on January 5th for example. Nothing you can do, no amount you bet will make them fold an ace-five. In their mind these are lucky cards and sooner or later they will hit for them.

Most donkeys are new players, some are old bad players that are just not going to change the way they play for you or anyone else. These are the players you will talk to yourself about driving home, after they crack your aces with eight-six suited, because it was their anniversary date. Sometimes a donkey will be a good player who has just got bored with the game they are in at the time, and just make a bad play.
